For Schools

Story Recall Measures

In January, February, and March, we are doing a special research activity with three books:

We want to find out: Do children remember different things about books when they hear them read in different ways?

So don’t open these yet!

We want the kids to hear them for the first time when your ASU student-researchers are there. (Because, if all the kids hear the books 100 times before the researchers come, ALL of them will remember everything and we won’t learn much!).

So…

If you have a teaching artist (plus ASU student-researchers) who come to your class:

Don’t open the books yet! The three books will be for your model lessons in January, February, and March.

What will happen:

  1. You’ll schedule your model lessons just like usual with your teaching artist
  2. Your ASU student-researcher assistant(s) will come to film the model lesson
  3. After the lesson, they’ll do some assessments with your students (the same students who do the other research activities with the ASU research assistants)
  4. Once the model lesson is over, you can unwrap your book and (re)read it as much as you’d like!

If you have ASU student-researchers who come to your class (but NO teaching artist):

Don’t open the books yet! The three books are for a special research activity in January, February, and March.

What will happen:

  1. You’ll schedule three times this spring (one in January, one in February, and one in March) with your ASU student-researcher(s) when they can come record you reading the books with your class.

January Book:  Lost and Found

February book: Kitten’s First Full Moon

March book: Muncha Muncha Muncha

2. A week or so before you read each book with your class, you can unwrap it and read it first yourself to get ready to read it with your class

3. On the day your ASU student-researcher comes to record, read the book with your class however you normally read new books. (No need to do anything special or different. We want to capture your way of doing things!)

4. After you read, your ASU student-researcher(s) will do some assessments with your students (the same students who do the other research activities)

5. After you do the filmed reading for each book, you can add it to your library and read it whenever you want!
