Amanishakhete Anacaona joined the Childsplay staff during the Summer Academy of 2023 as a resident teaching artist. Amani is a performing artist, creative writer, designer and jewelry artisan who has called Arizona home for four years. Amani received her undergraduate education from Southern University and Belhaven University. There she majored in Theatre Performance with an emphasis in playwriting. In 2011, Amani completed an acting intensive internship at Mississippi’s only professional theatre, New Stage Theatre. She later went on to co-found the Blue Light Underground Ensemble writing, acting and directing numerous works for the Ensemble. Her stage credits include Lady in Red/ For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, Cheryl/ Miss Nelson is Missing the Musical, Blanche/ Anna Lucasta, Hester La Negrita/ In the Blood, Christmas Past and Kate/ A Christmas Carol, Gloria/ The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Henrietta King (1st Actress)/ Do Lord Remember Me to name a few. Amani has performed in the Black Theatre Troupe’s acclaimed productions of Joe Turners Come and Gone and most recently, Steal Away.
