Taught by Debra K. Stevens
Inspired by the book and stage adaptation, in Deconstruction Zone students delve into Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo and explore it from different perspectives. Taught by Childsplay Associate Artist, Debra K. Stevens; participants practice acting, directing and playwriting skills as they develop original material inspired by the unique characters within this award-winning novel. This class is perfect for actors, writers and creative thinkers who want to explore the dangerous world of growing up. Themes for discussion may include understanding “otherness,” personal longing, and the celebration of creativity. This program culminates with a performance showcase for friends and families on the final day of class.
About The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
Kate DiCamillo takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the top of a garbage heap to the fireside of a hobos camp, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis. And along the way, we are shown a true miracle: even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and to love again.
Although some previous experience with The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (either book or play) is helpful, it is not necessary for participation in this class. Copies of the book will be available for all Deconstruction Zone participants to use.
