For Schools

Lit Lab

Program Overview:

This multi-week program offers PreK-2nd grade educators the opportunity to work one-one-one with a professional teaching artist to meaningfully integrate drama practices into your classroom. Our goal is that each teacher will build an expanded repertoire of lessons for their classroom while learning to:

  • build engaging storytimes
  • increase vocabulary, heighten relevant response, and expand empathetic engagement with stories
  • incorporate lesson structures that connect drama and literacy acquisition

Program Structure:

Similar to the Drama Frames and EYEPlay models, Literacy Lab uses an “I do, we do, you do” approach in which an educator progressively experiences and masters material. The program begins with an in-service at Childsplay’s Campus of Imagination and Wonder in Tempe. Teaching artists then work with teachers in their classrooms over several weeks beginning with a teaching artist modeled lesson, followed by planning and facilitating team and solo lessons, and collaborating together in ongoing reflection and assessment sessions.
