Childsplay Literacy Lab: EYEPlay with Pantomime

Activate literacy through drama and play in this multi week professional development program! Literacy Lab offers educators the opportunity to work one-on-one with a teaching artist to learn to meaningfully integrate drama practices into your classroom.

Program Structure

Literacy Lab begins a half day workshop at Childsplay on Pantomime, then a teaching artist will join you in your classroom for a 4 week unit that pairs pantomime with vocabulary development. Each unit is based on an “I do, we do, you do” model and is centered around one-on-one coaching.

Part One: Pantomime Workshop

  • Pantomime and Drama Facilitation Workshop at Childsplay on Saturday, April 30th from 11:30 am – 3:30 pm (lunch provided)

Part Two: One Pantomime Unit of Learning in your classroom  (May 1 – May 25)

  • A model lesson, taught in your room by your teaching artist
  • A two-hour in-service at Childsplay on Thursday May 5th (time TBD, after school hours)
  • A team lesson, co-taught by you and your teaching artist in your room
  • A private planning session with your teaching artist
  • A solo lesson, taught by you with your teaching artist present for support
  • A private feedback session with your teaching artist

Part Three: Wrap-Up

  • A final two-hour workshop at Childsplay on Thursday, May 26th (time TBD, after school hours)

Who can participate in this professional development program?

Teachers of children ages 3-6.  Participants must be available to participate in ALL program components including the workshops and in-class sessions. You must also have the permission of your site/school director prior to the start of the program. One registration covers the entire teaching team in one classroom (lead and assistant teachers). This program has been created for interested teachers to be able to gain professional development in drama and literacy, thus no more than 2 classrooms per school site are able to register at one time. If you work at a site with more than one interested classroom please contact Childsplay, and we can bring Literacy Lab to you!

Is there a cost?

Thanks to a generous contribution from the Whiteman Foundation, the cost of the program is highly subsidized.  Without the foundation’s support, the program would cost $450.

However, the program is now being offered to individual teachers at the cost of $150.
